A Quiet Presence That Remains: Remembering John and His Bookshop

There are some people whose presence becomes part of a place so completely that it is hard to imagine one without the other. John was one of those people.
As we look out our front door from The Lansdowne each day, our eyes are drawn, to that beautiful little bookshop across the street. A place full of character, warmth and quiet charm.
For so many years, that shop was more than a business. It was a reflection of John himself. Thoughtful, welcoming, and full of quiet knowledge. There was always a sense, when you stepped inside, that you might find not just a book, but exactly the right book. John had a gift for that. He was, above all, a gentle soul. He understood people, and he understood stories, and somehow he connected the two with ease.
Many of our team and guests will remember him daily in The Lansdowne, always with a kind word, always with time for a chat. His presence was never loud, but it was always felt. In a busy town, he brought a sense of calm and it’s hard to believe that he is no longer with us. Kenmare feels that loss deeply. There is an absence that words cannot quite capture. And yet, in a very real way, John is still here. Sunday 12th April, marked one month since John’s passing and the bookshops doors have reopened. The shelves are still lined with the books he so carefully curated. The space still carries his touch, his knowledge and his quiet love of books. And as people step inside once more, there is comfort in knowing that what he built continues.
It is a reminder that the things we create with care and kindness do not simply disappear. They remain and they continue to give.
Every day, as we look across at that little shop, we are reminded of John. Of his gentleness, his kindness, and the simple, meaningful way he moved through the world.
He will not be forgotten.
