An Evening of Theatre Magic in Kenmare

Last night, we had the pleasure of attending The Crow’s Old Gold at the Carnegie Arts Centre in Kenmare and what an experience it was. Written by Carina McNally and directed by Ciarán MacArtain, the play carried us into a world where folklore and human experience are beautifully interwoven.

At its heart, the story explores the pull of myth and superstition in our modern lives. Set against the wild landscape of West Cork, two women’s lives become entangled with the echoes of ancient gods and old beliefs. One is searching for hope and strength as she faces a life-changing moment, while the other is grounded, sceptical, and rooted in the everyday. Together, their encounter becomes a moving exploration of faith, resilience, and the way old stories can still shape us today.

From the very first lines, the dialogue was razor-sharp, witty, and deeply moving. It flowed effortlessly, keeping the audience hanging on every word. The two actors who brought this story to life were nothing short of phenomenal. Their timing, energy, and ability to hold the stage with such command was remarkable, not a single slip, just sheer commitment to the story they were telling.

The staging was simple, combined with the intimate setting of the Carnegie with the backdrop of the powerful and descriptive words from these two actors immersed us in the rugged beauty of the Beara Peninsula.

This was one of those nights where you leave the theatre with a sense of awe, reminded of the power of live performance and the way it can connect us to culture, place, and each other.

We are already looking forward to our next night of theatre at the Carnegie:

The Pension Plan by the Carnegie Players, returning by popular demand on September 26th for 4 nights. This will be our second time seeing this brilliant play as it was so good, and if last night’s experience is anything to go by, we’re in for another treat.

Kenmare is truly lucky to have such a vibrant arts hub and we can’t wait for the next curtain to rise.
