Summer Solstice Comes to Kenmare: A Celebration of Light, Community and Tradition

Sunday 21st June

There is something deeply special about the Summer Solstice.

For thousands of years across Ireland, the longest day of the year has been marked as a time of gathering, celebration and gratitude. Long before calendars and clocks, our ancestors watched the sun, the seasons and the land, recognising the solstice as a turning point in the year. It was a time for feasting after months of hard work, for music and storytelling, for dancing, laughter, bonfires and community.

For me, the Summer Solstice holds particularly fond memories. I grew up at the foot of the Hill of Tara, one of Ireland's most sacred and historic landscapes. The solstice was always an important part of our culture and heritage. While Tara is perhaps most famous for its connections to Ireland's ancient High Kings, it was also a place where people gathered to celebrate the changing seasons and the rhythms of the natural world.

Years later, we brought some of those traditions to Cahore by the sea. One of my favourite memories is watching people gather before dawn, wrapped in blankets and carrying flasks of tea, before heading into the sea for a sunrise swim. There was always a wonderful sense of togetherness. People arrived as strangers and often left as friends, united by the simple joy of welcoming a new day.

That is why I am particularly excited to see Kenmare launching its inaugural Summer Solstice Festival this year. On Sunday 21st June 2026, our town will come alive from sunrise to sunset with a wonderful programme of events celebrating wellness, culture, creativity, music and community. From yoga and spiritual walks at dawn to storytelling, traditional crafts, music, dancing and cultural performances throughout the day, the festival beautifully captures the spirit of what the solstice has always represented.

Kenmare is already a town renowned for its warmth, hospitality and sense of community. The Summer Solstice Festival feels like a natural extension of that spirit. It is an opportunity to pause, spend time with family and friends, connect with nature, celebrate local culture and simply enjoy being together.

Adding to the significance of the day, this year's Summer Solstice also falls on Father's Day, making it an especially meaningful occasion for families. Whether you are bringing Dad for breakfast on the Breakfast Trail, enjoying the festivities in The Square, attending the evening concert or simply spending quality time together, it is a wonderful opportunity to create memories that will last long after the longest day has passed.

The weather forecast suggests a cool but pleasant day, which is not unusual for Kenmare in June. If you are joining the sunrise or sunset events, I would strongly recommend dressing warmly, bringing a blanket, and packing a few comforts to make the experience even more enjoyable. The air by the water can still feel quite fresh, even on the longest day of the year.

Perhaps that is part of the magic. Standing outdoors as dawn breaks over the bay or watching the sun slowly set at the end of a day filled with music, laughter and celebration reminds us of something simple yet important: life is made up of these moments of connection. Connection to our families, our communities, our heritage and the natural world around us.

As someone who has celebrated the solstice from the ancient landscapes of Tara to the shores of Cahore, I cannot wait to experience it now in the place I proudly call home.

Congratulations to Lynne Brennan and everyone involved in organising this wonderful new event. I have no doubt it will become a cherished tradition for years to come.

We look forward to welcoming visitors and locals alike to Kenmare on Sunday 21st June for a day of celebration, culture, music and community.

Happy Summer Solstice, and Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful dads out there.

See you at sunrise. ☀️
