The Stories Above Our Heads

  • Feb 26

January is finally gone and always seems to arrive with instructions.

Strip things back. Turn off the lights. Get on with it.

But historically, winter was never something to simply endure. It was long, dark and uncertain. Warmth mattered. Ritual mattered. Beauty mattered.

They were not indulgences. They were survival.

So no, our Christmas lights were not still glowing into the early part of February because we were slow to take them down.

They stayed because we loved the softness they brought to dark evenings in Kenmare and so did everyone else. The comfort. The quiet welcome they offered guests arriving in from rain or cold. That gentle reminder that hospitality begins long before check in.

And also, quite unexpectedly, because we found an attic!

A Discovery Above the Corridor

It’s a proper attic. One you can stand up in.

The sort of discovery that feels surreal, like farmers finding ten new acres overnight. Space that had always existed, quietly waiting above us, unnoticed for decades. On 26th January, a new folding attic stair was installed, opening up a part of the building none of us had truly explored before. Suddenly the house grew larger, not through extension or redesign, but through rediscovery. Sometimes progress is simply opening a door that was always there.

The Space That Holds the Past

Up there, beneath the timber rafters, we found layers of life. From Patrick’s old school bags and golf clubs.... Elvis posters carefully rolled away.

Handwritten letters between Bobby and Breda from a time when bookings took weeks of correspondence rather than seconds online.

Four owners. Years of decisions. Decades of hospitality. Ordinary moments preserved without intention.

It felt less like storage and more like memory suspended in air. The quiet evidence of people who cared deeply for this house long before us.

The Bones of the Building

Standing there, you begin to understand a building differently. The stonework and the structure and the careful craftsmanship hidden behind ceilings and paint. Hotels are often judged by chandeliers, fabrics or finishes, yet what truly gives a place its feeling is care. Care shown consistently over years, sometimes generations. Maintenance unseen by guests but essential to the warmth they experience below.

The attic reminded us that hospitality is layered. What guests feel downstairs is supported by everything held quietly above.

Why the Glow Still Matters

And so, the lights stayed a little longer this winter. Because winter itself was not finished. Because warmth still mattered.

Because slowing down allowed us to uncover something meaningful. But most practically of all, our Christmas decorations finally have a proper home now. No more temporary corners or hurried packing. Just an orderly resting place until next season’s glow returns.

Buildings, like people, reveal themselves slowly. Sometimes all it takes is winter, curiosity, and the courage to climb the ladder.
